 Monday Evening, November 23, 1964
Mrs. Willard Schneider, 39, wife of Willard Schneider of Newport, died at 5 p.m. yesterday in University Hospital in Columbus. Born Feb. 8, 1925, in Newport Twp., a daughter of Earl T. and Gertrude Eddy Abicht, she attended Newport High School and for the past five years had been employed by the Pleasant's County Bank in St. Mary's, W. Va.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Matamoras, Catholic Women's Club, Mothers Club, and the Newport Pike Farm Council.

On Oct. 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Willard Schneider, who survives with two sons, Cecil and William of the family home.  In addition to her parents on Newport Route, surviving are two brothers, Ben Abicht of Eureka, W. Va., and Dean Abicht of Newport, one sister, Mrs. Harold Beck of Vandalia, and several nieces and nephews.  One brother, Earl Thomas, is deceased.

Funeral services will be at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marietta at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the Newport Cemetery.  The Holy Rosary will be recited at the Wieser and Cawley Furneral Home at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.  Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.


Soles, Mrs. Charles

 Mrs. Daisy Soles, 85 of Beavertown died at 11 AM yesterday in Marietta Memorial Hospital.

 Born March 2, 1883 in Beavertown, she was a daughter of William and Mary Butler Beaver. She was a member of Beavertown EUB Church. On April 28, 1909 she was married to Charles Soles, who preceded her in death.

 One sister survives, Mrs. Clarence Cochran of Beavertown, and one brother, Earl Beaver of Fly, with nieces and nephews. Four sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.

 Funeral services will be at 2 PM, Sunday in Beavertown EUB Church with the Rev. Frank Conley officiating. Burial will be at Parr Hill Cemetery at Beavertown. Friends may call at Hadley Funeral home in Matamoras from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. tomorrow and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M Saturday.

Ben’s Run Woman dies

Word was received in the city this afternoon that Mrs. Cleveland?? Sole of Bens Run had passed away at her home today after an illness of influenza and pneumonia. Mrs. Sole is the sister of Mrs. G. M. Beaver of Sistersville, and is survived by her husband and three sons. Funeral services will be held Wednesday. –Sistersville Review.


Mrs. Sarah Ann Eddy Smith, aged 87 years, for many years a resident of Williamstown, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Anna Stansbury at Long Beach, California, on 12-22-1928 of infirmities.

The body is expected to be brought to Williamstown for interment.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Nathan and Mrs. Elizabeth Holbert Eddy of Newport Twp.

Following her marriage to George Smith of Williamstown about 60 years ago, she lived in Williamstown.  In recent years she lived among her sons and daughters.

Those surviving are Thomas Smith, Arlando Smith of Sebring, Fla., Benjamin Smith of Portland, Oregon, W. Ervin Smith, former Marietta Music Dealer, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Stansbury of Long Beach.  Mrs. Mary Bush and Mrs. Hannah Eddy of Newport Twp. were the sisters of the deceased.

Sarah Anne (Eddy) Smith is buried in Westminister Memorial Park, 14801 Westminister Boulevard, Westminister, California 92683.

Robert Smith

Nov 30 , 2009 Marietta Times - NEWPORT - Robert E. Smith, 81, of Newport, Ohio, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday (Nov. 27, 2009) at Arbors of Marietta. He was born Saturday, Oct. 6, 1928, in Newport, Ohio, to the late Brady and Goldie Cameron Smith.

Bob was a graduate of Newport High School, served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 28 1945 to Dec. 27, 1947. He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 972 Electricians, American Legion Post 64, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5108, American Union Lodge 1 Free and Accepted Masons, Valley of Cambridge Scottish Rite, Washington County Scottish Rite Club, Aladdin Shrine Center, Marietta Shrine Club and St. Marys B.P.O. Elks.

He is survived by his two brothers, H. Donley Smith (Marylou) of Lower Newport, Ohio, and Barney S. Smith (Betty) of Newport, Ohio; a sister, Marcia Lou Summers (Bobby) of Newport, Ohio; a daughter, Deanna Meissner of Gulf Shores, Ala.; and two grandchildren, Kyle Meissner of Mobile, Ala., and Chelsea Meissner of Atlanta, Ga.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Jennings Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 2, 2009) at Hadley Funeral Home, Reno Chapel, with Lloyd Westbrook officiating. Burial is in Newport Cemetery with military services by American Legion Post 64 and VFW Post 5108. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 1, 2009). Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening (Dec. 1).

Mary F. Dana Smith

Former Bellefontaine resident Mary F. Smith, 84, of Jackson, Tenn., died Monday, March 12, 2007, at Bells Nursing Home in Bells, Tenn.

She was born in Newport on Jan. 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Dwight and Mary Ann McConnell Dana. On July 25, 1946, she married Richard A. Smith and he died Dec. 23, 1993. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Theadore Dana; and a sister, Lela Dana.

Survivors include sons, Allen (Phyllis) Smith of Navarre, Fla., Frederick David (Shar) Smith of Dahlonega, Ga., and John R. Susanna) Smith of Jackson, Tenn.; daughters, Virginia McGarry of Lummi Island, Wash., and Betsy Hutchinson of Raleigh, N.C.; brothers, William (Mary) Dana of Marietta and Max Dana of New Matamoras; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A former bookkeeper for Paul Wammes, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine and was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 173.

The Rev. William Zeller conducts a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday March 16, 2007, in the Bellefontaine Cemetery. No calling hours are planned. Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine handled arrangements.

James E. Skinner, 74, of Parkersburg, W.Va., passed away on Feb. 17, 2010, at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 28, 1935, in Newport, Ohio, a son of the late Elmer and Garnet Bayless Skinner.

He was retired from Mid-Ohio Valley Transit as a Mechanic and was a Baptist by faith.

He is survived by his five children, Steven Skinner of Ohio, Lori Enoch of Elizabeth, W.Va., Michael Anthony of Newark, W.Va., Randy Anthony of Scott Depot, W.Va., and Kathy Anthony of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katy Skinner; one daughter, Pamela Nutter; and one grandson, Kyle Enoch.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Marietta Times April 5, 2008 - NEWPORT — Alberta H. Shingleton, 85, of Newport, Ohio, passed away Thursday (April 3, 2008) at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.

She was born, March 28, 1923, in Newport, a daughter of the late Thomas W. and Etta Bayles Eddy. She was a 1941 graduate of Newport High School and a member of the Newport Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Larry R. Shingleton; three daughters, Kathryn Eddy and her husband, Lowell, Suzanne Snyder and her husband, Dave, Janet King and her husband, Casey, all of Newport, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Beth Palmer of Marietta, Jody Buegel of New Matamoras, Ohio, Thomas Eddy of Marietta, Justin Snyder of Newport, Ohio, Jessica Ann Napier of Ellenboro, W.Va., and Jennifer Russell of Marietta; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Hoff.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., with Evangelist Lloyd Westbrook officiating. Interment will be in the Newport Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.







Garnett Blake Sanford

Garnett Blake Sanford, 89, of Newport, Ohio, passed away on Oct. 21, 2014, at The Heritage in St. Marys, W.Va.

She was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Dexter City, Ohio, a daughter of the late Perry R. and Iva M. Harper Blake. She was a member of the Newport Church of Christ, where she was baptized Nov. 6, 1952.

She had worked for the former Lauers grocery, and the former Bonhams Department Store in Marietta, Ohio. She had been a kindergarten aide at the Newport Elementary School. She had been a member of the Newport Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, a member of the Rural Carriers Association Auxiliary, and a member of the former Mothers Club in Newport, Ohio.

She is survived by daughter, Rebecca Dillard of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; son, Earl (Mary) Sanford of Pennsboro, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Angela (Jason) Orbson of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Amy (Brian) Guthrie of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Greg (Natalie) Dillard of Old Hickory, Tenn., Tracy (John) Cook of Tucson, Ariz., Bryan (Selina) Sanford of West Union, W.Va., twelve great grandchildren, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and Charlie Patten of Caldwell, Ohio, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight E. Sanford; son-in-law, Bruce Dillard; two brothers, and three sisters.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., with Lloyd Westbrook officiating. Interment will follow in the Newport Cemetery, Newport, Ohio. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
