AN AGED SAINT ENTERS HEAVEN

by May Greene Bate

Mary Rebecca Adkins departed this life and entered into her eternal reward on December 27, 1929. Born in May 1840 she had attained the age of eighty-nine years. In 1861 she was united in marriage to James B. Greene who preceded her in death twenty years. One daughter, Alice Greene also preceded her in death. Five sons and three daughters mourn the loss of a loving and devoted mother but they rejoice with her in her release from pain and weariness and in her possession of the eternal inheritance.

For seventy years she has been a faithful member of our Newport Church and was known throughout the community as an earnest Christian, zealous in good works.

She always learned to watch for us

Anxious if we were late

In winter by the window

In summer by the gate.

And though we mocked her tenderly

Who had such foolish care

The long way home would seem more safe

Because she waited there.

Her thoughts were all so full of us

She never could forget

And so we think that where she is

She must be watching yet

Waiting till we come home to her

Anxious if we are late

Watching from heaven's window

Watching from heaven's gate.

Bury Me on the Hill Top High

by Alvin Adkins

Under the blue and startlet sky,

Placing my feet towards Sun Rise Street

Placing my head where sun sets meet,

Leaving one hand next to the Northern Light

Placing the right toward the South land bright.

Leave my soul in the care of God

Bury my hopes where Christ had trod,

Think of the Christ who died for me

Think of the Christ who made men free

Give to the world the best of will

Render to man ill for ill.

Forget me not in life's years

When time has dried your loving tears

Enrich the land that gave us birth

Make more happy this home of earth,

Honor the God whose land ye till,

Seeking the best your mission fulfill.

But when you bury my body in the hill top high

Under the blue and starlit sky,

Bury my love in the love of my friends

Letting it live there till Christ descends

Let it grow through eternity's end.

Eleanor Fulton Adkins writing of the Adkins farm home, which was onstructed in 1810 by Luther Dana and was owned by Adkins til 1967. - "There is more than an acre of lawn about our house and it is one of the most beautiful places in summertime that one ever sees. " The house stands well back from the Ohio River on a gently rising slope. The house is made from bricks made and burned on the farm land. Five generations of Adkins family have lived there beginning with Amos Adkins and family. The Adkins family has thus been a part of Newport life. A fortunate old house it is to have had such good care and love bestowed upon it. Submitted by John Burton Adkins

Notes for Jack Arnold Adams:

My father's battalion was in the line-up for the Normandy invasion, but his commader had a heart attack on  the eve of the attack and then died at 5 a.m. on June 6.  When he had the  heart attack, the battalion was pulled and replaced with another battalion.  That battalion suffered casualties of 50%.  Dad said they knew something was about to happen, and they were not allowed to send letters in the two weeks leading up to the invasion.  I have two letters that my father mailed to his half sister, but I have only a telegram he sent to his mother telling her he would be home in January of 1946.  It's so sad to me that the letters have  not survived.  I'd love to have letters from him and from his mother.  I'm so grateful that Sadie saved the letters.  There's a hankie in one of the letters.  I wonder about my grandmother living in West Virginia all by herself, on that lonely ridge.  They had wonderful neighbors down the lane, but my grandmother never drove.  Ah, the questions I should have asked.

 Marlene

That's fine that you copied the Normandy story. My dad's commander was a

Captain Lomax. Dad never saw combat as he was trained as a mechanic and

then spent time building runways with the Air Force at a base outside of

London. He used to tell of his first night in London when the Germans were

bombing. He said he was scared to death and then they got used to it. The

closest he came to combat was Normandy. He was able to visit Dacchau after

the war, not as part of the liberation. That's something else I should have

asked more about.
