Notes for William Rea:

"Memories of St. Marys

By Wiley I. Rea

My full name is Thurman Wilber Rea. I was born in 1935 and was raised in St. Marys, WV. I now reside in Yorba Linda, Orange County, California.

My first name is British and comes from my mother's side of the family. If you look in the book, The History of Pleasants County, D.A. to 1980, you will find a lot of Wilsons who are all my ancestors. The Reas in the book, Charles and Odie, were my grandfather's brothers.

My father's people were Irish and settled on the Ohio River in Washington County, about 1800; don't know for sure yet. One of my favorite family stories is that William Rea came down the river and opened an inn at Reas Run. They cut the fireplace into the rock face, and when he died they buried him on the hill right above the fireplace, on the mantle piece - literally. He must not have liked the cold so they put him there to keep him warm. Must have liked it, he is still there. "

Copied from the St Marys, Pleasants Co., WV Web site

According to the 1820 census William Rea has 2 sons under 10 and one son 16 - 26. He was 26-45 yr. He also has 2 dau 0-10 and 2 dau 10-16 wife was 26 - 45. No one lived in the home who was not Naturalized.

Notes for Lydia Ann Greene:

Taken from a speech give by Miss M. Ethel Hays at the Newport Methodist Church dates about 1960;

"T. I. McRae became pastor in 1866 and it is during his pastorate, in 1888, that the church was improved at a cost of$1700. At that time the from entrance , the vestibule, with the large center steeple and the two smaller cupolas were added. The building committee was composed of Dr. J. M. McElhinney, Mrs. Lydia G. Rea, W. S. Gano, James Kerr, and Richard Rea. On August 3, 1887, T. I. McRae was married to Miss Ella R. Hays, a Newport girl who was a great worker in the church. The wedding ceremony was performed in this church by the presiding elder, W. L. Dixon. Probably this was the first wedding ceremony to be culminized in this church."

All the names are handwritten, as is the note "Fred's mother". I descend from

the REYNOLDS/SEEVERS families of Washington Co. OH. John REYNOLDS m. Margaret

SEEVERS 1815. They had Margaret REYNOLDS SMITH 1828-1873, my maternal

grandmother (Newport to Pleasants Co. WV).Her son was Alfred T. SMITH. It was

in the 1896 SMITH family Bible in my possession.  I don't know who this

refers to. If anyone has an idea, please let me know. It appears to be the

same handwriting that listed the REYNOLDS 3 generations. Maybe it refers to

Frederick Dana REYNOLDS b. 21 Sept.1874. Ideas???

Thanks,

Becky

Marietta Times October 19, 1898

ANOTHER SOLDIER BOY - Everett Hays, a son of Mr. P.G. Hays, of Newport who was a member of the Hospital Corps, died at Fortress Monore, Sunday after an illness of some weeks with typhoid fever. His father was notified of his serious condition and went to his bedside early last week. His remains were brought home yesterday and are to be buried with military honors to-day. The soldiers who are at home on furlough held a meeting yesterday morning and decided to attend the funeral in body. If we are not mistaken Mr. Hays is the fifth son of Washington County to lay down his life for humanities sake. What to the five families and homes in to which sorrow and death have come is the whole race of semi-civilized Cubans

Notes for Mary Ethel Hays:

Taken from: "The Church Today" by Mary Heeter. A speech given about 1960 in the Newport Methodist Church

" Miss [Ethel] Hays, whom you just heard, has been our pianist for many years. she has worked tirelessly with our young people and has arranged interesting and appropriate programs for all occasions. Deep in her heart, Miss hays has cherished for years the dream that one day an electric organ would enhance our sanctuary and lend beauty in experssion to our worship services.

It was in the early summer of 1951 that the Amici Phiathes Class generously voted to give its $400 reserve as the original payment for an organ.  This substantial contribution, along with generous bequests from friends and former members, has given to our church an instrument of pride to all of us and of especial joy to our organist and friend, Miss, Hays. May I digress here to speak of behalf of the organ committee and say "Thank you, friends" for any and every part you have had in this enterprise."

Ethel Hays graduated from Newport High School in the Class of 1901, She earned a O.V. B. S. degree in the Cincinnati College of Music in 1930. She taught music in the Newport schools until she retired in 1949. She, also, taught private piano lessons to many students. She served as church organist for the Newport Methodist Church for 50 years.

In 1938, Ethel organized the Women's Civic Club. This club ws responsible for installing the electric lights in Newport. These lights were lit for the first time Monday, January 16, 1939.

Notes for William Snow Gano:

Taken from a speech give by Miss M. Ethel Hays at the Newport Methodist Church dates about 1960;

"In 1880, after several other pastors had served this charge, Rev. Doan was returned to the Newport Circuit. In one of his quarterly conferences reports he states: "Brother William S. Gano and some of the other young men with several of the young women of the Newport Society have undertaken to pay off the remaining debt on the Newport Church, now amounting to $570, and have succeeded so well that final success is now assured. Those young people deserve much honor for the quiet, but successful and energetic manner in which they have prosecuted this work. It is due to  the members of the ladies Aide Society that we say that Society is the largest subscriber to this fund, and that is in addition to previous payments for the same purpose, amounting to about $397. The truth appears to be that the women have saved the Newport Church. Whether it would finally have been saved without their aid, I know not; bit it is clear just that this record should be made. They have raised and applied to church purposes in fourteen years about $1800." respectfully submitted, J. H. Doan, P. C."

Later in the same speech:

"T. Lydia G. REVERAND ROBERT W. GARDINER

Robert W. Gardiner was born at Fairview, Ohio, on January 7th, 1856, and died in Geneve, Ohio, on March 9th, 1925.

His parents, William and Mary Gardiner, were intelligent and stanch members of the Methodist Protestant Church. with which church Robert united in early life. In a few years he was received into the Methodist Episcopal Church.

He graduated fro Scio College in 1880, and then studied medicine two years while superintendent of the public schools in his native town.

Upon recommendation of the Fairview Quarterly Conference, in 1885, the Barnesville District Conference gave him license to preach, Dr. Louise Paine being the presiding elder.

In 1886, he was employed as a supply on the Miltonsburg charge. On September 20th, 1887, in Cleveland, he was admitted on trail in the East Ohio conference, and Bishop E. G. Andrews returned him to Miltonsburg with the name of the charge changed to Malaga. His appointments afterwards were Newport, Summerfield, Rural Dale, Newton Falls, Kingsville, Kinsman, Lake Street, Ashtabula, Apple Creek, and Seville. Thirty-five years were thus given to intelligent and honest preaching of the Word, and most careful and sympathetic pastoral labor. He had clear and positive convictions concerning the gospel which he preached, and many profited greatly under his ministry.

He was ordained Deacon in Massilon on September 29, 1889, by Bishop C. H. Fowler.

In September of 1889 he was united in marriage with Miss Cora Rea of Newport, Ohio, whose parents, Richard and Frances Rea, were so devoted to the church that their whole family became workers in the church.

One dutiful daughter came to bless this parsonage home. She and her husband, Vigil Winkler of Geneva, gave the most loving attention to her parents in time of affliction, and comforted the father greatly in his dying hour. Mrs. Gardiner, who labored diligently in the church with her husband survives, but is a very great sufferer.

On account of failing health Brother Gardiner was given the retired relation in 1921. For a time he lived in Akron, and was a faithful worshiper with the people of the First Church. In 1823, he removed to Geneva, but could no longer participate i the activities of the church. He could only, with a noticeable Christain patience, wait the summons to exchange the scenes of earth for the glories of eternity.

In the home at Geneva, on the 11th of March, Dr. E. A. Jester conducted funeral services, in which Revs. F. R. Alkine, G. A. Gibson, J. W. Wilson, Elmer S Shepherd, and W. D. Starkey took part. On the same day Revs. Elmer S. Smith, W. A. Rutledge, and Jas. A Rutledge officiated at the interment in Stow cemetery near Akron.
